Childhood memories – Rob Edwards

Rob croppedRob used to play in the Nunnery open space and remembers Pearce’s scrap yard. He and his brother took newspapers to their yard in Albert Street where he would be rewarded with a toy windmill or maybe a few pennies. He also earned money on a Sunday by fetching coke in a pram from the gasworks. Rob remembers going to Saturday morning pictures at the Odeon. He has fond memories of a scam he and his mates used to get up to to do with the Odeon Club. They would buy a penny’s worth of stale buns from Thrales the bakers in London Road or chips from Lines chip chop in Sopwell Lane and eat them in the cinema.
